Description
The LDR (Light-Dependent Resistor) Photoresistor – 5mm GL5528 is a compact, low-cost photoconductive sensor designed to measure ambient light intensity in electronic circuits. Made from cadmium sulfide (CdS), this LDR exhibits photoconductivity, reducing its resistance as light intensity increases. At 10 lux (e.g., dim indoor lighting), resistance ranges from 5–10kΩ; in darkness (<1 lux), it exceeds 1MΩ; and at 1000 lux (bright daylight), it drops to ~100–200Ω. With a peak spectral response at 540nm (visible light, green-yellow), it mimics human eye sensitivity, making it ideal for applications like automatic lighting, dusk-to-dawn switches, and light meters. The 5mm diameter epoxy-encapsulated sensor (4.3mm body, 31mm leads) operates at 150V DC max, with a 100mW power dissipation and a current up to 20mA (0.5mA at 10 lux). Its response time is ~20ms (rise) and ~30ms (fall), suitable for gradual light changes but not rapid fluctuations. Operating from -30°C to +70°C, it’s robust for indoor and protected outdoor use, though it lacks an IP rating and should be shielded from moisture. For Arduino projects, connect the LDR in a voltage divider with a 10kΩ resistor to an analog pin (e.g., A0) to read light levels (0–1023 via 10-bit ADC). Example setup: LDR between 5V and A0, 10kΩ resistor from A0 to GND. Compatible with Raspberry Pi (via an ADC like ADS1115), ESP32, and other platforms, this RoHS-compliant LDR integrates easily with your earlier components, such as displaying light levels on a 16×2 LCD or triggering a NEMA 17 motor via an A4988 driver. Perfect for smart home automation, solar trackers, or educational experiments, the GL5528 offers high sensitivity and versatility. Note: Calibrate with known light sources for accuracy, and avoid prolonged exposure to UV or direct sunlight to extend lifespan.
